How to save a full Genie result as a CSV
Steps in this video
Steps in this video
- Ask your question
- Read the Genie answer
- Check the query
- Ask for every row
- Athena exports the result
- Check the CSV details
Export the result
- Connect a Databricks Genie space as an MCP server using the Databricks connection guide. An MCP server makes the space’s tools available to Athena.
- Ask Athena your question through the connected Genie space.
- Ask Athena to export every result row as CSV using the SQL from that answer. You can include a name for the file.
- Select the export card’s arrow to see its details: the file name, row count and column names. Check them before continuing your analysis. The card has no Open button, so find the CSV in your workspace under the name you gave it.
Handle an export failure
- Read the error returned by Athena.
- If no Databricks credential is available, reconnect the Databricks catalog and try again.
- If warehouse access fails, check that the connected account can use a SQL warehouse in the same Databricks workspace.
- If the result exceeds the export size limit, ask Athena to filter or aggregate the SQL, then export the smaller result.
Limits
- The export tool is attached to a connected Genie MCP server for a specific space. A SQL catalog connection alone does not provide this Genie workflow.
- The query runs with the identity used by that Genie connection. Its Databricks permissions still apply.
- Only read-only SQL is accepted. The export does not change your source tables.
- Exports have a 100 MB size limit. “Complete” means the complete result of the SQL you run, including any filters or limits already in that SQL.
- Exporting reruns the query. If source data changes after the Genie answer, the CSV can contain different results.
- The CSV contains column headers. Athena returns its asset, row count, column names, and a short preview after a successful export.
