Get your SMS number
Contact your workspace administrator or Athena support to obtain your dedicated SMS number for communicating with Athena.
Send your first message
Text your query or request to the provided Athena SMS number. You can ask questions, request information, or initiate tasks just as you would in the chat interface. Receive responses
Athena will process your request and send responses back via SMS. For complex tasks, you may receive multiple messages or a link to view detailed results in your workspace.
Continue the conversation
Reply to Athena’s messages to ask follow-up questions or provide additional context. Athena maintains conversation history to provide contextually relevant responses.
SMS messages may be subject to standard carrier rates. Check with your mobile provider for details on messaging costs.
Athena agents can live in Slack. Each agent that enables Slack gets its own Slack app and bot user, so your team can mention the agent in a channel and get an answer in the thread — with that agent’s configured sources, tools and instructions.How to Use Slack with Athena
Connect your Slack workspace (workspace admin, once)
At api.slack.com/apps, open Your App Configuration Tokens and generate a token for your Slack workspace. In Athena, open an agent’s Slack section, paste the access token (xoxe…) and refresh token (xoxe-1-…), and confirm Connect workspace Slack. This is done once per Athena workspace; Athena rotates the tokens automatically. Create and install the agent's bot
In the agent’s Slack section, pick a bot name and icon, click Create this Slack bot, then Install this Slack bot and authorize it in Slack. The bot goes live immediately, without publishing the agent.
Choose the channels
Add the channels the bot replies in, or switch on Enable all channels. Invite the bot to a channel like any Slack app, then mention it by its bot name.
Interact with the agent
Mention the bot in a channel it has been invited to:The agent replies in the thread. For complex outputs such as generated documents or visualizations, it links to the result in your Athena workspace. Each bot sees only the channels it has been invited to and, unless you enable all channels, replies only in the channels you list. Slack’s own workspace permissions still apply.

Add custom instructions (optional)
You can add custom instructions to guide how Athena responds during the call. The default Athena persona works well for most conversations.
Start the call
Click “Call me now” and Athena will call your phone. Answer the call to start your conversation.

Speak naturally as you would in a conversation. You can ask questions, brainstorm ideas, or simply think out loud. Athena will respond conversationally and help you work through your thoughts.After Your Call
Once you end the call, Athena automatically processes the conversation. The call recording and full transcript appear in your workspace with live refresh, so you can see the content as it’s being processed.The transcript becomes a searchable asset that you can reference later. To query your call content, use the @ symbol to tag the call asset in a new chat, then ask questions about what you discussed. This makes phone calls a powerful way to capture context that you can later search, summarize, or build upon.Phone calls are great for capturing ideas on the go. Have a 20-30 minute brainstorming session while walking, then later reference the transcript to extract action items or key insights.
During the pilot period, phone calls are optimized for speed rather than full tool usage. Athena may not be able to create documents or perform complex actions during a call, but you can always follow up in chat afterward.
