# Computer sleep and inactivity

> Set an inactivity interval and understand when to reconnect or start your Computer

Your Computer can hibernate after a period of inactivity. Use the inactivity setting when you want it to remain available between tasks or stop after you finish working. Reconnecting restores your browser connection. Starting a stopped Computer changes its runtime state. These are separate actions.

## Set the inactivity interval

1. Open your Computer and select **Details**.
2. Find **Auto-stop**. Open the **Inactivity:** selector, which also shows the current interval.
3. Choose **15 min**, **30 min**, **1 hr**, **2 hr**, **4 hr**, **1 day**, or **Off**. Select **Save default** to keep it as the default.
4. Check the resulting status. **Off** disables inactivity hibernation and shows **Always on** while the Computer is running.
5. Select **Save default** if you want to save the current interval as this Computer's default.

Choose **1 day** when you need a full day of inactivity before hibernation. It measures idle time, rather than time since you opened the asset. Changing the interval does not count as activity or reset the activity timestamp.

## Keep a Computer awake temporarily

You need edit access and a running Computer whose runtime supports **Keep Awake**.

1. Select **Keep Awake**.
2. Choose **15 minutes**, **1 hour**, **2 hours**, or **4 hours**.
3. Review the confirmation and select **Keep Awake**.
4. Check that the status confirms the hold and shows its end time. If the result is unconfirmed, select **Check status**.

Each hold has a fixed end time. Closing the page does not extend it. Normal inactivity settings apply when the hold ends, and **Stop** remains available during the hold.

## Return to your Computer

1. Open the same Computer after a browser reload or connection interruption.
2. Let the connection checks finish. If they fail, use **Retry Connection**.
3. If the Computer is stopped, open **Details** and select **Start**. A deliberate **Stop** remains in effect until you start it.
4. Wait for the runtime to become available before returning to your files or terminal.

A dropped browser connection does not itself mean the Computer hibernates. Terminal reconnection can return you to a surviving shell. It does not guarantee that processes survive a runtime stop or restart.

## Good to know

You need edit permission to change inactivity settings or use lifecycle controls. The runtime must support inactivity hibernation. When the countdown is available, you can see the remaining time. Near expiry, **Keep awake** refreshes Computer activity. It does not change your selected interval.
