# Computer files and terminals

> Read Markdown files, edit their source, and return to a browser terminal after a reload

Your Computer includes a file browser and a terminal for inspecting files and running commands. Use the file browser to read generated Markdown or review its source. Use the terminal when you need command output, tests, or an interactive shell. After a reload, the browser attempts to return you to the same surviving shell.

## Read and edit Markdown

1. Open your Computer and select **File explorer**.
2. Open a file ending in `.md` or `.markdown`. It opens as formatted Markdown.
3. Select the **View markdown source** icon to inspect the underlying text. Its name appears as a tooltip.
4. If you have edit permission, change the source and select **Save (Ctrl+S)**. You can also use the keyboard shortcut.
5. Select **Preview markdown** to return to the formatted view.

The preview renders the text currently in the editor. Switching views does not save your changes. Save before leaving the file if you want the changes written to the Computer. When you open another Markdown file, it starts in preview mode again.

You can also select **Open the file system** to browse files in the left-hand pane while you work in another tab.

## Return to a terminal after a reload

1. Open **More**, then **Terminal**, and run your command.
2. After a connection interruption or page reload, return to the same Computer in the same browser tab. It opens on **Preview**, so open **More**, then **Terminal** again.
3. Wait while the terminal shows **Reconnecting terminal…**. The browser attempts to reattach to the saved terminal session, which may already be done by the time you reopen it.
4. Read the recovered output before running the command again. Check whether the original command still runs or has already finished.

If the original shell ends while you are away, the browser may open a new terminal.

## Limits

You need edit permission to browse Computer files and use its terminal. Terminal access also depends on runtime support. Shell recovery applies to a surviving terminal session. It does not promise recovery after the Computer stops or restarts. Recovery also needs browser session storage. A temporary connection error alone does not cause the browser to replace the saved shell.
