# Choosing your next message

> Use /options to review, edit, or send a suggested next message

The `/options` command asks Athena to suggest possible next messages based on your session. Use it when you want help deciding how to continue a conversation or narrowing the next step to a specific topic. Suggestions appear in a separate picker. You choose whether to send one, edit it first, or leave it unused.

  1. Type /options
  2. Add a focus, press Enter
  3. Wait for Next steps
  4. Choose a suggestion
  5. Edit it in the composer
  6. Send your message
</Accordion>

## Ask for suggestions

1. Open the session you want to continue.
2. Enter `/options` in the composer and submit it. You can also select **Suggest next messages** from the slash command menu, which always opens with no focus.
3. Wait for the suggestions to finish loading.
4. Wait for **Thinking** to finish. Up to three numbered suggestions appear in a **Next steps** card above the composer, each with a Copy button. Select the one you want to use.

To focus the request, type the topic after the command and submit it. For example, enter `/options summarize the findings`. A focus only works when typed this way, not through the menu entry. Athena uses that focus together with the conversation to suggest what you might say next.

The command opens the suggestion picker instead of sending `/options` as an ordinary message in the session. Selecting a suggestion alone does not send it.

## Send or edit a suggestion

1. Select a suggestion in the picker.
2. Select **Send** to send that text as your next message. The picker closes and Athena receives an ordinary session message.
3. To revise it first, use **Edit the chosen suggestion in the chat composer**. Review the text in the composer, make your changes, and send it when ready.

You can also use **Copy this suggestion** to copy an option for later use. Copying does not submit a message. If you send directly from the picker, text you have since typed in the composer stays there.

## Good to know

Suggestions are choices for your next message. They do not execute until you send a message. The picker shows **No suggestions.** if the request returns none. Sending a suggestion follows the session's normal sending checks. Finish or cancel an existing message edit before sending from the picker. The slash menu entry is available only in a composer that supports the picker.
